When someone searches "fence company near me", Google shows a map with three businesses before any website. Your Google Business Profile decides whether you are one of them. It is free, and most fence companies leave half of it empty. Here is how to set it up properly.
1. Claim and verify
Go to Google Business Profile, search your company name, and claim it or create it. Google verifies by video, phone or postcard. Use the exact legal business name, not "Best Fence Company Round Rock Cheap". Stuffing keywords into the name breaks Google's rules and can get the profile suspended.
2. Pick the right categories
- Main category: Fence contractor
- Secondary categories, only for work you really do: Fence supply store if you sell material, Gate contractor, Deck builder, Contractor
The main category matters most. It is what Google uses to decide if you belong in "fence company near me".
3. Set your service area
Most fence companies go to the customer, so hide your street address and list the cities or ZIP codes you serve. Keep it realistic: the towns you really drive to. Listing 60 cities does not help you rank in all of them.
4. Add services, with prices where you can
Add each service separately: wood privacy fence installation, vinyl fence installation, chain link fence installation, aluminum fence, gate installation, fence repair, fence removal. Write one or two sentences for each, and add a starting price if you are comfortable:
- Wood privacy fence: from $2,000 for the first 50 feet
- Chain link fence: from $1,100 for the first 50 feet
- Fence repair: from $350
- Gate installation: from $550
Prices filter out the people looking for a $500 fence and show the rest you are upfront.
5. Photos, lots of them
Fence buyers buy with their eyes. Upload:
- Finished fences, one per job, from the angle that shows them best
- Before and after on replacements
- Gates close up, including hardware
- Your truck and trailer with your logo and your crew at work
Add a few new photos every week in season. Geotagging does not matter much; consistency does.
6. Reviews
Reviews are one of the biggest factors in who shows up on the map. Ask after every install and answer every review. The full method is in how to get more Google reviews.
7. Posts
Google lets you publish short posts. Use them for seasonal offers ("Book a spring install before April"), new project photos, and tips ("Do you need a permit for a fence in Williamson County?"). One post a week keeps the profile active.
8. Questions and answers
Anyone can ask a question on your profile, and anyone can answer it. Add the common ones yourself and answer them: "Do you pull the permit?" "How long does an install take?" "Do you take a deposit?" "Do you remove the old fence?"
9. Link to the right page
Add your website link, and if you can, a booking link that goes straight to scheduling an estimate. A homeowner who taps your website from the map should land on a page with your fences, your prices and a way to get a range right away. That is what a fence company website with a calculator is for.
Mistakes that hold fence companies back
- Keywords in the business name. It works for a while, then a competitor reports it and the profile gets suspended
- A home address listed as a storefront. If customers cannot walk in, use a service area
- Duplicate profiles for the same company, often left over from an old phone number. Merge or remove them
- Photos only from the first month. A profile with no new photos for a year looks closed
- Ignoring messages. If you turn on chat, answer it, or turn it off
10. Keep it current
Hours, phone number, holiday closures, new services. A profile that says "open" when nobody answers loses trust fast. If you cannot answer the phone during install hours, an answering service keeps the profile honest.
What Google looks at besides the profile
Google ranks the map by relevance, distance and prominence. Your profile covers relevance. Prominence comes from reviews and from your website: a page for each fence type and each town, fast pages, and posts that answer what homeowners search. The fence company website checklist covers that half.
Frequently asked questions
What category should a fence company use on Google?
Use Fence contractor as the main category. Add secondary categories only for services you really offer, such as gate contractor or deck builder.
Should I show my address on my Google Business Profile?
If customers do not come to you, hide the address and set a service area with the towns or ZIP codes you really serve.
