What a 200-foot fence costs
At the typical rates in this calculator, a 200-foot backyard fence, before gates and tear-out:

What adds to the price
- Gates. A walk gate adds $250 (chain link) to $550 (vinyl). A double drive gate adds $600 to $1,300
- Tearing out the old fence. About $400 for chain link and $600 for wood or vinyl on a typical yard, hauled away
- Stain or seal on a new wood fence, about $700
- Hard digging. Rock, caliche or roots can add to every post hole
- Slopes. Stepped or racked panels take longer to set
Repairs and gates on their own
A fence repair starts at $350 for one 8-foot section and adds $30 a foot after that, so two sections (16 feet) come to $590. A new gate on its own starts at $550 for a 4-foot walk gate and adds $75 for each foot wider; a 12-foot drive gate comes to $1,150.
Before you sign
Ask who pulls the permit, who calls in the utility locate, how deep the posts go and what the deposit is. A 30% deposit is common for custom material. Read fence permits and property lines before the first post goes in.
